Violinist Diana Jipa and pianist Ștefan Doniga—celebrated worldwide and recognized by Guinness World Records for their groundbreaking seven-continent concert tour—will perform their latest recital, MUSICA PROHIBITA, in New York as an uplifting message of remembrance and resilience, dedicated to the 80th commemoration of the Holocaust.
Wednesday, October 1, 7:30 pm
(120 W 69th St, New York, NY 10023)
This deeply symbolic program shines a light on music that was once silenced: works banned, censored, or marginalized by oppressive regimes because of the ethnicity, faith, or political stance of their creators. From Shostakovich’s veiled defiance in the Soviet Union to Bloch’s profound Jewish identity, from Constantinescu and Jora’s struggles in Romania to the nearly forgotten voice of the Ukrainian-Jewish composer Serghei Bortkiewicz, each score testifies to the courage of creation in the face of persecution. By reviving these works—including a new commission by Romanian composer Roman Vlad—Jipa and Doniga affirm that music, though forbidden, endures as the truest form of resistance, carrying memory and freedom across generations.
The concert is part of a worldwide tour co-funded by the Romanian Cultural Institute, with stops in Geneva, Vienna, and Nairobi.
