LET’S GET TOGETHER FOR THE UNIVERSAL DAY OF THE ROMANIAN BLOUSE

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

We are pleased to join forces with IA DAY NYC, the Embassy of Moldova to the U.N. and the Consulate General of Romania in New York for a community event celebrating one of the most recognizable artifacts of our traditional culture – the Romanian blouse or ia românească. Included by UNESCO on the list of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity, made an international icon by Matisse’s famous painting "La Blouse Roumaine" and achieving mainstream popularity in the US thanks to the hippie generation, the blouse (ia) is at once a sartorial piece worn by Romanian women for generations, a "text" full of symbols and messages, and a landmark of (mostly) anonymous folk creativity.

If you happen to have a Romanian blouse or clothes inspired by it, let’s get together in the Gantry Plaza State Park at Hunter’s Point, Queens at 11 am on June 24 to join enthusiasts all over the world marking in unison the Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse.
