An innovative fashion showcase at the intersection of avantgarde aesthetics, technology, and political activism
The second edition of our Romanian Annual Fashion Showcase opens Friday, February 17, during the New York Fashion Week 2023, bringing front and center award-wining, San Francisco-based designer CAMELIA SKIKOS, an innovative creator working at the intersection of avant-garde aesthetics, technology, and political activism.
The show focuses on the influential designer’s stylistic vocabulary as typified by the bold lines and cuts of her latest collections, “Language of Goddess” (2020), “Permission to Bloom” (2021/2022), and “Imago” (2023), which aim to discern, as an overarching goal, how garments can make an impact on our lives based on the unconscious relations between us and the clothes we wear.
The approximately 20 pieces on display will be accompanied by Camelia’s sketches and illustrations, which underscore her complex creative process defined by a conscious effort to maintain a small environmental footprint by working with Bay Area garment manufacturers, by using cruelty-free materials, and by producing in limited quantities. Don’t miss the opportunity for an all-around access to the creative lab of a visionary designer whose ideas and works embody today’s most daring fashion creativity.
The exhibition opens at the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York on February 17, with a special event running between 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
CAMELIA SKIKOS graduated from the Faculty of Art & Design at the „George Enescu” National University of Arts, then moved to London where she completed her fashion studies while working as an illustrator and fashion designer for various British brands. After working as a designer for well-known brands such as GAP and LEVI STRAUSS, she launched her own brand "Camelia Skikos", a conceptual women's clothing brand based in San Francisco, launched in 2010. In 2011 she won the "San Francisco Fashion Award" for the best designer of women's clothing. While developing its brand as a creative playground to explore new aesthetic boundaries, Camelia also continues to collaborate with other fashion and technology companies. Since 2014, she has been a consultant at GOOGLE on wearable technology designing smart clothing using interactive textiles.
