ANCA POTERASU GALLERY

Founded in May and housed in late 19th century old heritage building in Bucharest, Anca Poterasu Gallery started from just 215 sq ft of exhibition space in a unique turn-of-the-century-old setting to being now one of the best-known visual arts platforms in the Romanian capital. Showing art in different media – painting, drawing, art-objects, installation, photography and moving image - the gallery primarily represents Romanian artists, both well-established and emerging. The exhibition program is centered on a curatorial practice that encourages collaborations with art practitioners from across the country and around the world as well as on consistent participation in selected international art fairs.

#Episode 2: ANCA POTERASU Gallery

Wounded Identity

Artists: Adelina Ivan, Adriana Jebeleanu, Alex Mirutziu, Olivia Mihălțianu, Pusha Petrov

Curator: Ileana Pintilie

17.10 - 22.11.2020

The current exhibition, entitled “Wounded Identity”, is curated by Ileana Pintilie and presents artists Adelina Ivan, Adriana Jebeleanu, Alex Mirutziu, Olivia Mihălțianu and Pusha Petrov who are questioning the concept of identity, offering unexpected nuances through the subtle complexity of the works presented.

Based on Kevin Hetherington's influential social theory -  which claims that, if an identity is defined in relation with the other, the generic Otherness, then the contemporary society is facing a serious crisis as the result of many fragmented identities - the show joins in this crucial contemporary discussion about identity, which has also become a major theme in art as well as politics and culture in general. By calling into question their own self, the five artists examine the interplay and blending of the multiple layers of their identity, with the aim to attach meaning to this multi-faceted reality.

ABOUT THE GALLERIST AND THE CURATOR

Anca Poterasu Gallery was founded in 2011, but its story begins in 2007, when Anca started selecting works from artists workshops for art collectors. At the first glance the step from art

dealer to gallery owner seems simple, but for Anca Poterasu it meant taking on a long-term commitment.

From 2016, the Gallery team consists of Anca Poterasu and the curator Cristina Stoenescu. Cristina has a special interest in social sciences, having a portfolio of interdisciplinary projects on the border between art and politics. After specializing in curatorial programs in Maastricht, she returned to Romania in 2016, wanting to contribute to the development of the local art scene.

Together they made more than a series of exhibitions, they built a whole context socially and culturally relevant for the contemporary art scene in Romania.
