Art Fridays: Studio Conversations with Ioana Stanca

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

In Pursuit of Textures and Tactility

Ioana Stanca (b. 1987) belongs to the young generation of Romanian artists. She studied painting at Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, Italy and at the National University of Arts in Bucharest, were she received her B.F.A and M.F.A.

In her works, Ioana emphasizes texture and tactility, and this interest has pushed her to expand towards other media besides painting and to focus on different techniques of working with textiles. The sewing machine, which she uses to create embroideries and installations, has become part of her creative universe not just like a simple tool but more like an extension of her artistic will.

Exploring the fabric and its possibilities as a border between one’s body and the world, Ioana Stanca is seeking to create her own universe, one that is populated with soft sculptures and studio pieces in different shapes and dimensions. In her works one can distinguish images of anthropomorphic scissors, female bodies or coils. In addition, as she has increasingly become interested in conservation, various recycled fabrics have been integrated into the production process as a way to question the enormous quantity of fabrics swallowed by the textile industry.

Ioana’s STUDIO is just a generic name of a place where ideas take solid shapes. It can be anywhere: a room, a beach, a table or even her own body. What makes the studio is the artist’s presence and her sewing tools, seen as extensions of her hands.
