Art Fridays: Studio Conversations with Aurora Király

Architectural Reflections

Aurora Király ( b. 1970), who is teaching at the Department of Photography and Dynamic Image of the National University of the Arts in Bucharest and holds a doctoral degree in Photography, immerses herself in the contemporary artistic phenomenon in different roles: as an artist and as an initiator of cultural and educational projects. We are glad to welcome her to our "Studio Conversations" series, featuring 10 rising stars of the Romanian artistic scene.

As an artist, Aurora Király is working with photography and installation in different media. During the 1990s and the 2000s, her projects explored the capacity of photography to record the common existence by combining auto-referential fragments with documentary aspects of day-to-day life like in her project ”Melancholia” (1997-1999). Her most recent works question the way the sources of artistic inspiration are influenced by context, from recent history to art history and the status of women artists.

As a cultural manager, between 2001 and 2008 she ran one of the most significant photography art spaces in Romania, Galeria Nouă (The New Gallery), where she curated numerous exhibitions and events. In 2006 she coordinated the volume „Photography in Contemporary Art. Trends in Romania after 1989”, published by Galeria Nouă & Unarte Publishing House, and between 2007-2012 she lead the project ”Witnesses XXI – Revisiting the Past”, a collection of video interviews with Romanian artists, art critics, and curators from different generations.

For Aurora, the studio, with its view of the Bucharest skyline highlighting various building styles, is an architectural structure that helps her clarify her ideas, write down different thoughts, arrange the materials of her future works or simply enjoy the working process.
