Art Fridays Presents: Romanian Gallery Tours / Cetate Arts Danube & 418 Gallery

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

The first rural gallery in Romania

Cetate Arts Danube is a growing international art center established by Joana Grevers, a medical doctor and art historian, under the aegis of her cultural foundation. Dr. Dr. Grevers is a member of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection Advisory Board and of Tate London’s Eastern European Acquisitions Committee as well as the director of 418 Gallery. The center hosts artists from all over the world, supports creative residencies and offers contemporary art exhibitions, symposia, conferences, and workshops.

The 418 Gallery is Joana Grevers Foundation’s most successful project. It is located at Cetate, right on the bank of the Danube, in the southern part of the country and counts as the first rural gallery in Romania. Located in what used to be a former agricultural estate dating from the second half of the 19th century, the exhibition space, built in a former barn, thrives on the tension between the rustic makeup and the very rural surroundings, on one hand, and the cutting-edge, big scale projects of mostly young artists, on the other. Together with the Foundation and Cetate Arts Danube, the gallery also contributes to the development of the rural region where it is located.

The 418 Gallery’s most recent project is a group exhibition entitled ”Young Artists, Young Friends. Accroachment III. Old and New” and curated by Simona Vilău, which runs from August 14 to October 24, 2021. The space is divided in four sections, each corresponding to a specific theme: the Sculptors’ Summer Studio, The Item Room, The Blue Room, and The Exploratory Room.
