About The Event

Thanks to Bucharest-based Ivan Gallery, two of the most influential and revered Romanian artists of the last decades, Geta Brătescu and Ion Grigorescu, will be presented at the forthcoming Independent Art Fair in New York, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute. The Fair, an important fixture of the contemporary art calendar, takes place at Spring Studios in Lower Manhattan between May 5-8 and brings together 66 galleries from all over the world.

Independent remains the New York art fair whose edge most deserves to be called cutting, the one where you stand to learn the most about promising new art” - Roberta Smith, co-chief art critic of The New York Times

Geta Brătescu (b. 1926 - d. 2018) and Ion Grigorescu (b. 1945), though artists from different generations, are both regarded as pioneers of conceptualist practices in post-war, Communist Romania. Besides the mutual traits of their artistic practices - complex, process-based endeavors employed in various techniques and media -, they were also friends and collaborators throughout their careers. The two artists shot together three of Geta Brătescu’s films, The Hands in 1977, The Studio in 1978, and Ludus in 2004, and they were supportive of each other’s experiments alternative to the official artistic canon of the Communist era. They exhibited together in photography exhibitions curated by Ion Grigorescu, such as Photographs Taken by Plastic Artists in 1982, while Geta Brătescu hosted in her studio private screenings of Ion Grigorescu’s famous experimental films.

Ivan Gallery, opened in 2007 in Bucharest, is one of Romania’s most internationally active galleries whose aim was to invigorate the Romanian commercial gallery scene. Run by the curator and cultural promoter Marian Ivan, the gallery developed many fruitful collaborations with famous world art institutions like MoMA, the Venice Biennale, Istanbul Biennale, Tate London, Hammer Museum, Palais de Tokyo, New Museum, giving its projects and artists an international exposure few other Romanian galleries have enjoyed.
