Freedom on the Line: The Romanian Revolution of 1989

We are proud to partner with the Victims of Communism Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, and the Embassy of Romania to the United States for an evening of conversation and film that revisits the most seminal moment in Romania’s recent history, the Revolution of 1989, which set the foundation for a tremendous development that transformed a decrepit, isolated communist dictatorship into a thriving democracy, part of NATO and the European Union.

Held under the patronage of Ambassador of Romania Andrei Muraru, who will offer the opening remarks together with Ambassador Andrew Bremberg, the Director of the Museum, the event features a stellar panel of experts in the history of communism in Romania and Eastern Europe: Professor Dennis Deletant, Woodrow Wilson Public Policy Fellow; Dorin Tudoran, famous anti-communist dissident, poet, essayist, and journalist; and Professor Melissa Feinberg, Professor of History and Department Chair at Rutgers University. The panel will be moderated by the RCI Director, Dorian Branea.

The evening will conclude with a screening of Dobrivoie Kerpenisan’s documentary, Rebels with a Cause (2019, running time: 55’) about the Revolution of Timișoara and how it changed the life of some of its protagonists, met again 25 years after.
