About The Event
Writer and academic Doris Plantus is the next author presented in our breakthrough literary series dedicated to women writers from the Romanian-American diaspora and set up in partnership with Denver-based Bucharest Inside the Beltway.
Women’s voices dominate the literature written by Romanians in North America. Co-curated with author and academic Cristina A. Bejan, this literary series, turning the spotlight on this phenomenal wave of creativity, brings together the largest group of Romanian-American and Romanian-Canadian women writers ever assembled in cyberspace. The program’s second season features another inspiring and diverse line-up of authors, including Raluca Albu, Adina Dabija, Daniela Groza, Felicia Mihali, Adriana Oniță, Doris Plantus, Anca Roncea, Elena Secotă, and Saviana Stănescu.
Doris Plantus is the middle daughter of an immigrant carpenter from Bucovina, and mother, whose family emigrated from Banat, Romania. She has enjoyed living in two languages and cultures her whole life, and attributes her many creative undertakings to her bilingual and bicultural experiences growing up in Detroit, Michigan. She put herself through graduate school, working a variety of jobs while raising two sons, and earned her Ph.D. in English with a concentration in translation and adaptation studies. Her characteristic archaic and regionalist style in Romanian prose and poetry is a point of pride for her devoted preservation of the language she inherited and passed on to her own children. Currently she teaches a variety of courses in English at Oakland University, with a specialty in Bible as Literature. But her real passion is exploring meaning through expression, from bilingual writing, painting, iconography, sculpture, and music, to stargazing, building tree forts with her father’s tools, and making wine. She lives in Troy, Michigan.
