About The Event

The “Contemporary Romanian Art Scene in 8 Gallery Tours” series, which for months has presented some of Romania’s best exhibition spaces, curators and artists, is now running as part of “Art Fridays”, our visual arts program meant to broaden the scope of your journey by illuminating all corners of Romanian visual creativity and inviting you to engage, no matter where you are. Continue the exploration of the most influential Romanian galleries, enjoy the hottest exhibitions all over the country, learn about recent works by first-rate artists and let yourselves be guided and transformed by the works artists create in response to the world we live in.

 EP. 8 / KUNSTHALLE BEGA

The final stop of our tour of some of the most influential visual arts hubs is Timișoara, in Western Romania. Join us for a 180-degree look at Kunsthalle Bega, an innovative concept which blends ways old and new in showcasing visual creativity and which tries to make a meaningful contribution to the social life of the city.

The Kunsthalle is an art space halfway between a museum and an art gallery, the ideal solution, some would say, for a place which takes into consideration traditional values while also retaining the ability to look into the future. A platform of this kind aspires to complement the social, political and aesthetic dimensions of a city with an utopical expansion. The concept was first introduced in Romania by Calina Foundation of Timisoara with the opening, in 2019, of Kunsthalle Bega. The initiative belonged to gallerist Alina Cristescu, curator Liviana Dan and artist Bogdan Rața, while the new space’s first project was the exhibition "Seeing Time", curated by Liviana Dan.

Kunsthalle Bega occupies a generous post-industrial warehouse centrally located in Timisoara – a quite unusual position in Romania’s landscape of abandoned factories – and acts as an alternative space that invites young artists to express themselves through radical aesthetic practices. The gallery projects a self-acknowledged programmatic tension between supporting the socially critical work of the younger generations of artists and, at the same time, working to enhance the social cohesion of the city through visual arts projects. Each year, Kunsthalle Bega awards the BEGA ARTPRIZE for curatorial work.

Don’t miss the premiere on our Facebook, IGTV and YouTube on February 5 at 2 p.m. New York & Toronto time / 11 a.m. Los Angeles & Vancouver time / 9 p.m. Bucharest time. Watch also on our website and other social media accounts anytime later.
